When you install the Windows Support Tools it puts a Help file in the Start Menu that has the information about the tools and how to use them, so I won't post it all here. Basically though you run the program and pick applications that look suspicious. By this I mean any that you've had any problems installing/uninstalling, or any that don't run correctly. If there aren't any you might not have any corrupted installer information. Normally a corruption would completely stop you from installing/uninstalling programs. Since your uninstalls eventually go through this might not be the case, but it's worth a shot.
Another thing to look at would be the system and application logs in event viewer. Look for any errors to see if they might have some information relating to the problem. Especially look for any service errors from the Windows Installer service. Hmm, could also try reinstalling/updating the Windows Installer from to see if that helps. Yes I have had this problem before, and Microsoft say that reinstalling windows installer should fix it, as Kenneniah mentioned. Definately give that a go.
Unfortunately this did not fix my problem, I had to do a windows repair in the end to fix it. Spyware was the cause of mine. If reinstalling windows installer does not work try this 1. Scan for viruses 2. Scan for spyware, I like Ad-Aware 3. Run checkdisk, at the dos prompt type 'chkdsk /F' (without the quotes), this will fix any errors if found. If it still no work, try repairing xp.

I am trying to upgrade my Windows Vista Home Premium OS to Windows 7 Home Premium. Two things happen that are driving me nuts: 1) I ran Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor and received a short list of programs to uninstall. No problem, except for Google Toolbar. I used Uninstall Software from the Control Panel to remove it. That apparently wasn't enough. I went to my IE8 and Firefox browsers and removed Google Toolbar. I even uninstalled Google Chrome for the heck of it. When I restart the Windows 7 upgrade, I'm told that I need to remove, you guessed it, Google Toolbar.
I just don't know where to find another instance to remove so I started installing anyway in hopes that I could reinstall it once the upgrade was finished. 2) Twice the Windows 7 upgrade has hung during the 'Gathering Files, Settings, & Programs' step. The first time I got to 85%, the second to 46%. I don't know how to get past it. Again, I have an HP desktop that's about a year old running Windows Vista 32-bit home premium. All of the latest Windows Vista updates have been installed. Thanks for any help you can provide.
Hi Kplank, You should also update the BIOS and hardware drivers first. After that, I suggest you, copy all the installation files from the Windows 7 installation disk to the local hard disk and start the Upgrade Install from there in. If the issue persists, would you please upload the following information to and provide us the link for analyzing? System Information 1.
Click “ Start”, type in “ msinfo32” (without quotation marks) in the Search bar and then press Enter. Choose “ Save” from the File menu and save it as an NFO file.

Hi Arthur, I solved the problem myself and finished installing Windows 7. The problem was that I turned off my virus scanning software (McAfee) but forgot about spyware software (PC Tools) and backup software (Second Copy 7) that run in the background. Once I shut them down, the installation went smoothly. Thank you for responding to my initial e-mail. Karyn That’s great! This is also why I suggest you start the installation in Clean Boot.
In this mode, no third party software is started and we can avoid the software conflict. Arthur Li - MSFT.
